This intermediate level course offers an exploration of the complex changes that occur in the human brain as we age. Designed for psychologists and other licensed therapists, this course will provide an understanding of normal aging processes in the brain, as well as the onset and progression of common neurodegenerative disorders. Participants will gain knowledge of the latest research on cognitive function in older adults. Practical applications for clinicians will be emphasized, including when and how to refer for assessment, accommodations and adjustments to intervention that may be helpful for clients with cognitive change, and support strategies for clients experiencing age-related changes. Through a blend of theoretical knowledge and case-based learning, participants will develop strong foundational knowledge of the aging brain to assist in providing comprehensive and informed mental health care to older adults.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the normal aging process of the brain, including structural and functional changes.
  2. Differentiate between normal age-related cognitive changes and early signs of dementia.
  3. Identify practical solutions for working with older adults experiencing cognitive changes.
